American Diamond vs Real Diamond: What's the Difference?

If you've shopped for affordable sparkle, you've seen the term American Diamond (or “AD”). It looks brilliant, costs a fraction of a natural diamond, and shows up in everything from dainty studs to grand bridal sets. But what exactly is it, and how is it different from a real diamond? Here's a simple guide.

What is an American Diamond?

An American Diamond is not a diamond at all — it's a cubic zirconia (CZ), a lab-made stone engineered to mimic the brilliance of a diamond. It's colourless, cut with many facets to throw light beautifully, and set just like a real gem. In India, “American Diamond” and “AD” are simply the popular names for this high-sparkle imitation stone.

How is it different from a real diamond?

The differences come down to four things:

Composition. A real diamond is natural crystallised carbon; an American Diamond is lab-created cubic zirconia.

Price. This is the big one — AD jewellery costs a tiny fraction of natural-diamond jewellery, which is why you can own a full statement set rather than a single small stone.

Look. To the everyday eye, a well-cut American Diamond sparkles just as brilliantly as a diamond. Under close inspection a jeweller can tell them apart (CZ actually throws slightly more rainbow “fire”), but in real-world wear it reads as dazzling.

Durability. Diamonds are the hardest natural material; cubic zirconia is durable for fashion jewellery but softer, so AD pieces are best cared for gently (more on that below).

Why American Diamond jewellery is a smart choice

AD jewellery lets you wear the look you love for every occasion without locking up money in one expensive piece. It's perfect for building a versatile collection — minimal studs for work, a statement set for a wedding — and for travelling, since you're not carrying high-value items. At Zulekha, our American Diamond pieces are set on a lightweight brass alloy with a rhodium finish, so they sparkle like the real thing and stay comfortable all day.

How to choose a good-quality AD piece

Look for stones that are clear and colourless (not cloudy), neatly set with no gaps, and a clean, even plating finish. A good cut is what makes AD jewellery look expensive — the more precise the facets, the more it sparkles.

Caring for American Diamond jewellery

Keep it away from water, perfume and sweat, wipe gently with a soft dry cloth, and store it in a pouch so the stones don't scratch. With this simple routine your AD jewellery will keep its shine for a long time. (See more tips on our FAQ page.)
